Pre trek training weekends at Snowdon Lodge
Our training weekends
are designed to provide you with the skills and information
to make sure you are in the best shape physically and mentally
to be able to succeed in your chosen challenge and enjoy the
experience of a lifetime while supporting your chosen charity.
Each weekend will
consist of a walk in the mountains on both days during which
we will discuss many topics related to your challenge.
The Saturday walk will be a full on day walk lasting 5 to 6
hours which will give you a good idea how you will cope with
walking for this length for 5 or 15 days on your chosen trek.
Sunday is a more relaxing day starting with an informal chat
about how to look after yourself while on the trek followed
by a short walk and maybe an early finish to enable everyone
to get home at a reasonable time ready for work on Monday, the
main elements which we will discus are:-
Clothing and Equipment
Looking at appropriate
clothing for the challenge being undertaken and highlighting
some key points. Mount Kilimanjaro is almost on the Equator
in the heart of the African plane so the area is normally very
hot, however Kilimanjaro is almost 6,000 metres high, with glaciers
on the top, it can be very cold, wet and windy at any time of
year. You need to be prepared and be able to choose and use
suitable clothing.
The Mountain Walk
This is to prepare
you for the physical effort and mental stamina needed on many
of the challenges. You will learn some skills to help you travel
over the varied terrain you are likely to encounter on your
challenge, including the use of walking poles, setting a good
pace, keeping together and going over rough ground.
Health and Hygiene
Personal hygiene
is very important while you are away, you will not have the
same facilities you have at home. You don't have the same immune
system as the locals and can easily catch an infection, anything
from DVT or Malaria to HIV or Traveller's tummy but we will
give you some simple basic rules to help reduce the risks.
We are only to pleased
to answer any questions you may have or go into more detail
about any subject that you are concerned about or want to know
more about, you only have to ask.

SNOWDON LODGE!
You will be staying at Snowdon Lodge, a grade 2 listed building
and the birthplace of famous Welshman T.E. Lawrence, better
known as Lawrence of Arabia. Today, the house is a 4 star
Wales Tourist Board accredited hostel which offers fantastic
accommodation and food to outdoor people of all ages. The
lodge is located in the centre of Snowdonia National Park in
North Wales, close to Porthmadog, Beddgelert and Black Rock
Sands beach. The Italianate village of Portmeirion, the Ffestiniog
and Welsh Highland narrow gauge Railways are all close by, as
are a selection of castles. Snowdon Lodge is the ideal base
to access to some of Britains most stunning mountainous
terrain. Despite Snowdonias popularity, we will show you
that it is
possible to get off the main tourist paths and into the wilds.
Useful information!
Facts about Mount Snowdon
· At 3560 feet (1085 metres) Snowdon is the highest mountain
in England and Wales.
· There are six main paths up Snowdon:
Llanberis Path
Miners Track
Pig Track

Snowdon Ranger Path
Watkin Path

translates to The Great Tomb in English.
· Thomas Johnson made the first recorded ascent of Snowdon
in 1639 to search for botanical specimens.
· Llanberis, the village at the foot of Snowdon has been
described as The Chamonix of Wales.
· The original engines used on the Snowdon Mountain Railway
were made in Switzerland.
· Clogwyn Dur Arddu on Snowdon was the first rock
climbing
cliff to have a whole book devoted to it. "The Black Cliff"
cost
£2.55 when first published in 1971, if you can find a
copy, it is
now worth in excess of £150!
· Refreshments were first sold at the summit of Snowdon
by an enterprising miner named Morris Williams in 1838.
. In the 1950s Joe Brown and his colleagues slid down
the Snowdonia Mountain Railway after their climbs by placing
a flat

most
common bird seen on Snowdon.
· The Snowdon area comprises many different rock types.
They
are mostly of volcanic origin with Rhyolite and Dolerite being
the most common. The two types can be clearly seen from Pont
y Cromlech on the Llanberis Pass. Looking toward Crib Goch
(south west), the crags known as Dinas Mot (due south) have
a smoother central 'nose' which is Rhyolite and darker, rougher
much more vegetated 'wings'. These are Dolerite. It is also
worth noting that the summit of Snowdon itself is the remains
of an extinct volcano.
